This week at USDA saw the return of all Department employees, and one of the big challenges on the agenda was how to help blizzard-stricken ranchers and farmers in South Dakota. Under Secretary Michael Scuse got a first hand look and gave producers hope for assistance. Meanwhile Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack was on the road calling for congressional action on the budget, a new Farm Bill and immigration reform. He said those issues are critical for the economic health of rural America. The first USDA census on the effectiveness of getting locally grown food into schools came out showing good results. The Farm to School program aims to get school districts across the nation to get more food for student meals from local farms and gardens. And for those interested in seeing the best Fall colors, USDA has a handy online tool to find the best autumn foliage and how to get to it.
