Deputy Chief Human Capital Officer, Office of Human Resources Management
Mrs. Michelle Long is USDA’s Deputy Chief Human Capital Officer. She began her federal career three and a half decades ago as a student intern at Livingstone College in Salisbury, North Carolina. Her experience sparked an appreciation for student internships and the opportunities they provide for bringing good candidates into a career of Federal service.
Prior to this latest role as the Department’s Deputy CHCO, Mrs. Long served as a Senior Advisor in the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Administration (ASA) at USDA. In this critical position, she provided invaluable guidance on a myriad of complex and sensitive issues, enabling the successful execution of programs and projects essential to the USDA's administrative and operational mission.
She also served as the Director of Resource Management and Audit for the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS). In this critical role, she led a complex operational portfolio responsible for the execution of a $33M operating budget, administrative audits, space management, telecommunications, human resources, policy development/implementation, as well as acquisitions.
Mrs. Long's extraordinary career also encompasses pivotal positions such as the Chief of Executive Resources Operations and the Executive Resources Program Manager at the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS), Senior Human Resources Advisor at the Department of Veterans Affairs, as well as Compliance Specialist for Enforcement Operations, FSIS. These roles further underscore her comprehensive understanding of human resources, administrative management and her exceptional ability to provide guidance and oversight for full-service operational and policy organizations.
